Evening Prayer

Begin Evening Prayer at home by lighting a candle and spending a few moments to quiet yourself.

Prepatory Prayer

Merciful Father of us all,
through Isaiah the Prophet you promised
that "though our sins are like scarlet,
they shall be like snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool."
As we remember our sins and failings,
give us trusting and penitent hearts
in your unbroken promises of forgiveness.
By the precious blood of Jesus
shed on the hill of Golgotha,
wash us clean of all our offenses,
and make us your loving and obedient children,
now and forever.

~Amen.

Spend the introductory music portion of this song to relax, center yourself and quiet your mind.

Introduction

God, + come to my assistance.
– Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
– as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Opening Prayer

Almighty God, we give you thanks for surrounding us, as daylight fades, with the brightness of the vesper light; and we implore you of your great mercy that, as you enfold us with the radiance of this light, so you would shine into our hearts the brightness of your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grant us, Lord, the lamp of charity which never fails, that it may burn in us and shed its light on those around us, and that by its brightness we may have a vision of that holy City, where dwells the true and never-failing Light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord God Almighty, as you have taught us to call the evening, the morning, and the noonday one day; and have made the sun to know its going down: Dispel the darkness of our hearts, that by your brightness we may know you to be the true God and eternal light, living and reigning for ever and ever. Amen.

Seek him who made all creation, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth: The Lord is his name. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Thus says the LORD:
Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,
    who seeks his strength in flesh,
    whose heart turns away from the LORD.
He is like a barren bush in the desert
    that enjoys no change of season,
But stands in a lava waste,
    a salt and empty earth.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
    whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
    that stretches out its roots to the stream:
It fears not the heat when it comes,
    its leaves stay green;
In the year of drought it shows no distress,
    but still bears fruit.
More tortuous than all else is the human heart,
    beyond remedy; who can understand it?
I, the LORD, alone probe the mind
    and test the heart,
To reward everyone according to his ways,
    according to the merit of his deeds.

The Our Father

Our Father, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Closing Prayer

Loving and Merciful God, thank you for being my help today—perhaps in ways I have not seen. You have guided and protected me, cared for and comforted me. In this crisis and in every struggle in life, You have shown Yourself faithful. You are the God of Hope and I’m thankful tonight for joy and peace in Your presence. I pray again for my family and friends in need, and for others who are also hurting or lonely tonight. Be their refuge and strength and draw them closer to You, Lord. You are sovereign, good, loving and kind, Lord, and I praise Your worthy name. Amen.”
