Our History

Our mother of Perpetual Help Parish

A Journey of Faith, Unity, and Renewal

How Two Became One

from cluster-to merger-to today

On July 1, 2012, Our Lady of Fatima (Oak Park) and St. James (Ferndale) entered into a new chapter as cluster parishes. This cluster developed over time, and on January 1, 2014—The Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God—our two communities merged to become one: Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish. The first Mass of our newly unified parish was celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church, marking the beginning of a shared mission rooted in faith, hope, and love.

We are one community of faith with a rich and resilient history. In September 2023, a parish transition team was formed to prayerfully discern the future sustainability of our parish. Through months of meetings, town halls, and heartfelt input from parishioners and clergy, the team reached a consensus: to close St. James Church. On October 21, 2024, Archbishop Allen Vigneron issued a decree relegating St. James Church to secular but not unbecoming use. The final liturgy—a Closing Mass filled with gratitude and remembrance—was celebrated on Sunday, November 3, 2024.

We remain deeply thankful for Fr. Paul Chateau’s steady leadership and clear pastoral vision as we continue to walk forward together in faith.

Our Lady of Fatima Church

Honoring Our Past, Living Our Present, Embracing Our Future

Our Lady of Fatima Parish was founded on June 15, 1950, when Cardinal Mooney appointed Rev. George Parzych—affectionately known as “Fr. George”—as our first pastor. With about 200 families, the earliest Masses were held in the humble Clinton School House, where Fr. George carried his liturgical items in an Army trunk. That same year, the first parish building was constructed: the rectory, which later became the convent.

In 1954, the Sisters of St. Joseph from Garfield Heights, Ohio arrived to teach in our parish school, serving faithfully alongside lay educators for nearly two decades. A devastating fire struck on February 17, 1956, destroying the original church building. Guided by Fr. George’s unwavering spirit, plans for a new church began. On Christmas Eve 1957, the community gathered to celebrate the first Mass in the present church. The current rectory was added in 1962.

From 1968 to 1971, Msgr. John Bradley served with deep devotion until his untimely passing. In 1972, Fr. Tom Flynn and Fr. Paul Chateau were appointed Co-Pastors, and since 1977, Fr. Paul has continued to shepherd our parish with love and dedication.

Over the years, many faith-filled priests, sisters, and lay leaders have helped shape our journey toward Christ. We honor the contributions of Fr. William Smith, Fr. William Davidson, Fr. Richard Bonin, Fr. Joseph Ferens, Fr. Michael Donovan, and Sr. Jane Zolteck, among others, whose presence enriched our spiritual home.
